One of the most common questions I get asked is “What should we wear for our family photos?”
As part of our session planning for family photos in Sydney, I personally guide you through the process of selecting and coordinating outfits for the entire family. This has to be one of my favourite things to help with.

I started my studio wardrobe over five years ago to simplify preparation for my clients. I offer a curated selection of pieces that are not only flattering but also photograph beautifully.

The clothing you choose has a big impact on the overall aesthetic of your final images. It’s best to select outfits that make you feel comfortable and feature timeless colors. This ensures the focus remains on your family’s connection rather than your clothing.

Here are some tips to help you put together your outfits:

How to choose what to wear for your Family Photos in Sydney:

Start with Mum’s outfit first

I love to start with Mum’s outfit first, and then put together the rest of the family’s outfits from there, so that they all compliment and layer together beautifully.

Select your colour palette

Choose 3-4 colors, focusing on neutrals and softer muted tones. Light, neutral, earthy, and muted tones create modern yet timeless images. Consider your location and choose colors that complement it, such as ivory and soft dusty blues for beach photos or deeper muted tones for contrast in a field of long grass.

Include a pattern

Add in a subtle pattern for one family member to avoid everyone wearing block colors. Choose pieces for other family members that tie in with or compliment the colors within the pattern. Think ditsy florals, gingham, and embroidery etc.

Add texture & movement

Adding texture brings depth and interest to your outfits. Choose materials like wool knits, lace, and corduroy. Include fabrics that bring movement, such as chiffon, linen, and silk. Make sure clothing is clean and ironed.

Consider the season for your family photos in Sydney

Whilst our weather in Sydney is mostly mild throughout the year for family photos outdoors, we do get some very chilly days in the winter, and some very hot days in the summer. Dress appropriately for the weather to keep children comfortable – a photo session can end very quickly if children are too hot or too cold.

Layer with cardigans, chunky knits, or stockings in winter and choose breezy, lightweight fabrics in summer, especially for Sydney beach photos.

Children’s outfits

For children, ensure clothing fits well and is not too loose. Avoid shirts with collars and big ruffles that can block faces. Opt for simple necklines and colors that complement your own.

For toddlers, rompers and one-piece outfits work best to prevent shirts and pants from riding up or exposing nappies.

The studio wardrobe

Clients are welcome to borrow clothing from my studio wardrobe, which features a large range of carefully curated pieces for mums, as well as babies and toddlers up to five years old.

Additional Helpful Tips

Footwear: Choose simple and classic footwear that compliments your outfit without drawing too much attention. Barefeet are perfect for family photos on the beach in Sydney, as well as in the studio.

Accessories: Keep accessories minimal to avoid distracting from the main focus—your family’s connection.

Hair & Makeup: Consider professional hair and makeup to ensure you look your best and feel confident during the session.

Coordinate but Don’t Match: Aim for a cohesive look without everyone wearing the exact same colors or patterns.

Lay Out Outfits Together: Lay all the outfits out together (on your bed or lounge room floor works great) to ensure they coordinate well and photograph beautifully as a group. Send a photo to me for advice if you’re not sure if it works well together.

For putting together outfits for your Sydney family photos, some of the shops we love are Zara, Country Road, Aje, Industrie, Jamie Kay, Target, Coven & Co, Needle & Thread, Zimmermann, and Shona Joy.

BEHIND THE LENS

ABOUT SARAH

As a lover of art, design, and the timeless craft of photography, I find my true bliss with a camera in hand, capturing moments that transcend the ordinary.

From a young age, I eagerly borrowed my mother's Kodak cameras. Each click of the shutter ignited a profound curiosity within me, and couldn't wait to see what was revealed on the developed film.
I've always been fascinated by the power of photography to capture raw emotion and preserve cherished memories, and how those humble photographs will tell our stories for generations to come.
