Bringing a toddler to a newborn family photoshoot? I get it—toddlers are unpredictable, full of energy, and have their own agenda! But don’t worry, I’ve seen it all before, and my goal is to make the session as relaxed as possible for everyone. Here’s how we’ll make it work:
Setting Expectations
Every toddler is different—a busy 2-year-old boy is going to need a different approach than a calm 4-year-old girl. Some toddlers love being in front of the camera, while others need a little extra time to warm up. Either way, I have plenty of tricks up my sleeve to keep things running smoothly!

How to Prepare Your Toddler
Keep it light and fun – Let them know they’ll get to take some special photos with their new sibling, but don’t put too much pressure on them. Talking about the photos and their behaviour too much can make them feel overwhelmed.
Bring simple, mess-free snacks – No chocolate or sticky treats (trust me on this one!). Dry crackers, fruit pouches, or mini rice cakes are great options.
Pack a favourite comfort item – A small, neutral coloured toy or comforter can help them feel secure without being too distracting in photos.
Dress them comfortably – Something soft and neutral that allows them to move freely. I have lots of recommendations and specific tips for toddler outfits as part of our session planning.

What Happens During the Session?
We’ll start with family photos while your toddler is still engaged and happy.
If they need a break, that’s totally fine! Dad (or another caregiver) can step out with them while we capture those quiet, beautiful moments with just baby.
If they’re wiggly, we’ll go with the flow—playing little games or letting them interact naturally with their sibling.

Let go of your own expectations
Toddlers will be toddlers. If they need to run around, hide under a blanket, or take five snack breaks, that’s okay! My job is to capture real moments, not perfection. No matter how the session unfolds, we’ll create something beautiful.
